A Little History

Edwin Warfield first became involved with local business news and information in 1983 but the family history really began in 1888.

In 1984, Mr. Warfield took over a failing public notice newspaper started by his great grandfather, Governor Edwin Warfield. After buying out an eclectic group of 80 shareholders, the young Warfield transformed The Daily Record into a nationally recognized local business communications company. In the late 90s, his activism for small, minority and disenfranchised business took the form of using the newspaper to promote the resurrection of The Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce which had been subsumed into the Greater Baltimore Committee – a regional think tank for economic development and a fraternity for ”Big Company” ideology. In 1994, predicting that public notice would follow the inevitable course towards the internet, Mr. Warfield sold The Daily Record to Dolan Media.

In the same year, he started his first internet venture, Reviewnet, which was voted the best online newspaper site in 1997 and 1998. Reviewnet was renamed The Local Business Network, and partnerships were established with a host of companies to include Hoovers, Tribune, Times Mirror, Digital Cities (AOL), and Netscape. In March 2000, Local Business was sold to Wasserstein and Times Mirror, but its Chairman, Warfield, held on to the dream for yet a better product.

Five more years in the making, and that product is here with the birth of citybizlist.

Let’s grow together.
